Hi y'all!

I started watching the show a while ago and doing reviews (some more thinky, some filled with squee and nitpicking). I was going to share/post them to the comm but life has been kind of beyond hectic and so I haven't had a chance to, until now. So, now that I'm done with the show (and with reviewing it) I thought I'd put up links to all the relevant entries. I debated whether to copy the relevant passages to the community (sometimes the reviews came in the middle of entries about other things) but decided I wanted to point people to where the discussions originally happened instead of potentially going over the same points.

I'd welcome discussion/squee/whatever in either the entries or here in the comm.

I've been wondering if we here are a big enough community to sustain regular fanwork activity, among all the other things we do elsewhere. I'd be keen to know what you thought.

I've been having a conversation with zvi about search engine blocking for communities, which I followed up with bantha_fodder, my co-mod. Out of those conversation we decided we should give you, community members, subscribers and readers, the opportunity to have a say rather than let my (Vera's!) own attitude rule out the opportunity for fans to search and find our community.

This is the current setting for eastwest101: Off-Site Search Engines - Attempt to block outside search engines from indexing my community.

We won't be making a change based solely on the poll result. If the result is close then we'd like to have a longer conversation. If the poll is heavily one way or the other, we'll go with that. Please do expand your thoughts in comments.

If the community does change to Don't Block, remember that you can post community locked and such a post won't be indexed. In this case we will also give members the opportunity to change their own existing posts to 'members only' before changing the community settings.

We'll leave this up for a few days to give those who want it a chance to think about it.

What shall we do with ourselves?

bantha_fodder and I had a brief chat over email and thought it a good idea, since we are a small community, to ask everyone what they'd like to do on/with the comm. Communities are always more attractive to new members if they are active. Some thoughts we had:

- Live discussion post (This Tuesday!)
- Yuletide pimpin' post
- Do something very orderly with our resources
- Make more resources - cap the DVDs, transcripts (begun)
- Link to other work by the cast (Heartbreak High!)
- News info on the show/casting/overseas sales of the show etc

I know that some of you have some stuff planned re discussion/meta posts and uploads. (\o/) Anyone who is busy writing fan fiction should know we pretty much love you already.

What do you think? Is there anything you'd like us to lead with? Any kind of community activity that inspires like icon challenges, memes, drabble-a-thons?

The community is open to posting by all members. Do post anything East West 101 related. Members can also create tags. If you're not sure if it's on topic you can private message either or myself through Dreamwidth or bantha_fodder through LJ.

I've never participated in yuletide in any way other than a reader. I might be a bit behind the eight ball. I did notice today, however, that our show is a nominated fandom! Doubtless one of you did the nominating so you already know. Yay!

That brings me to a project I have planned: transcripts. Non-Australians find our slouchy-vowelled accents hard to hear, particularly those delicious and crisply enunciating North Americans. I believe it will help lure them into the fandom if we have some supporting documentation and may increase the number of people willing to write it for Yuletide, should anyone request it. Is anyone interested in helping out? I'll list the episodes here. Claim in comments. No pressure/no time limit. If no-one else has time, I'll get through them all eventually! (Oh for one of those dictaphone thingies with the foot control - happy days.)

I know the technology exists that we could subtitle the dvd rips ourselves. Not being a vidder, I'm not sure how to go about that. Would it be a useful long term project?

Finally, Australian Television Information Archive has some Australian newspaper articles about the show, including interviews with Don Hany and Aaron Fa'aoso.

EDIT: In comments kayloulee suggests: Also, I think a good way to do transcripts would be to tape the episodes on digital TV with teletext, because if you tape a digital+teletext recording (I assume this also works with DVD-recording) then the subtitles stay on the tape.

I saw a link being posted to a Variety article on US Screen Actors Guild diversity statistics which inspired me to do a local search.

I turned up two two longish, if old documents on casting diversity in Australia. We're certainly due for new research data. They first is a Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance submission that refers to 1999 and 2002 data. The second is one of the documents referred to in the first. I'm not going to try and summarise! Both documents are pdf download links.
